NEW DELHI: Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar echoed current skipper Rohit Sharma‘s sentiments regarding the significance of ‘hunger’ in Test cricket, suggesting that players need to exhibit a strong desire and commitment to excel in the longest format of the game.
Gavaskar’s comments come in the wake of Rohit’s post-match statement following India’s victory against England in the fourth Test, where he emphasized the importance of hunger for success in Test cricket.
Addressing the issue, Gavaskar stated on Sports Tak, “He’s absolutely right. The ones who want to play Test cricket, you look at them. I’ve been saying this for years. The players are what they are because of Indian cricket… So you’ve got to show some loyalty towards Indian cricket.”While not directly naming any players, Gavaskar indirectly hinted at the decisions of centrally contracted cricketers to skip the Ranji Trophy, suggesting that their absence may indicate a lack of hunger for Test cricket.
“Maybe they have decided not to play Test cricket for India… So you can’t do anything,” Gavaskar remarked.

Expressing concern over the trend of players picking and choosing formats, Gavaskar stressed the importance of commitment to the national team. He emphasized that the recognition and opportunities afforded to cricketers are a result of Indian cricket’s support and platform, urging players to reciprocate with loyalty and dedication.

In addition to highlighting the issue of player commitment, Gavaskar proposed a structural change in the domestic cricket calendar to prioritize red-ball cricket and provide adequate preparation for Test cricket.
He suggested advancing the Ranji Trophy season to avoid clashes with international fixtures and IPL preparations, ensuring that players have ample opportunities for match practice and readiness for Test cricket.
However, Gavaskar acknowledged the challenges in implementing such changes, considering the current scheduling patterns in India’s domestic cricket calendar. Despite the obstacles, he emphasized the importance of addressing the issue to nurture young talent and strengthen India’s Test cricket prospects in the long run.
