NEW DELHI: Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer slammed attractive half-centuries as India registered their highest total of the 2023 ODI World Cup against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on Thursday.
As India amassed 357 for 8 after being put into bat, Gill fired a run-a-ball 92 while Kohli went on to score a 94-ball 88 before missing out on a record-equalling ton.
Shyreyas too hit a belligerent 56-ball 82 in the latter half of the innings but the platform for the massive total was laid by record 189-run stand between Gill and Kohli — the highest partnership for India in a World Cup game at home.
Shreyas during the mid-innings break lauded the Gill-Kohli effort and asserted that the partnership was pretty crucial after India lost skipper Rohit Sharma second-ball into the contest.
Shreyas also said that the Wankhede wicket was excellent to bat on despite the odd balls holding a bit.
“I think it was a pretty good wicket to bat, the ball was coming on and there was some nice bounce. I could settle for a while and then play my shots. It was magnificent to watch (on the partnership between Gill and Kohli), the way they took the singles, twos and the boundaries, they laid the platform for us. We were told that the odd ball was stopping and holding a bit, so it was a good partnership that they had and it helped us later on,” Shreyas said during the mid innings break.
India are looking for a seventh straight win at the ongoing ODI World Cup.
Rohit and co. remain the only team in the tournament, who hasn’t lost a match yet.
