NEW DELHI: Sarfaraz Khan, the promising Indian batsman, faces an uncertain future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) despite garnering interest from multiple franchises.
Following his release by Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, Sarfaraz’s journey in the league hangs in the balance. Sarfaraz’s stint in the IPL has been marked by inconsistency, despite his impressive performances in domestic cricket.

Sourav Ganguly, Delhi Capitals’ director of cricket, shed light on the decision to release Sarfaraz, attributing it to his perceived suitability for traditional red-ball cricket over the fast-paced T20 format.

“I think he is more of a five-day player. His game is suited for that. T20 is a different format and the amount of runs he has scored in domestic cricket – in Ranji Trophy and other First-class games is phenomenal. And as they say, if you score runs, it doesn’t go to waste,” Ganguly told RevSportz.

Despite going unsold at the IPL 2024 auction, Sarfaraz’s fortunes took a positive turn following his stellar performance against England in the recent Test match at Rajkot.

Reports suggest that several franchises, including Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, have expressed interest in acquiring Sarfaraz’s services for the upcoming season.
According to sources, Gautam Gambhir, mentor of KKR, has been vocal about Sarfaraz’s potential contribution to the team. However, competition from other franchises, including CSK and Royal Challengers Bangalore, poses a significant challenge in securing his signature.
Since Sarfaraz was not eligible for the trading window after his release from Delhi Capitals, any potential deal would likely materialize as a last-minute signing.
