NEW DELHI: Peshawar Zalmi emerged victorious over Islamabad United in a thrilling Pakistan Super League match on Monday.
Babar Azam‘s unbeaten century and Arif Yaqoob‘s exceptional four-wicket over played a crucial role in Peshawar’s eight-run win.
Babar smashed 111 off just 63 balls, including 14 fours and two sixes, leading Peshawar to a total of 201/5.
Islamabad seemed poised to chase down the target, thanks to an electrifying century partnership between Azam Khan (75) and Colin Munro (71).
However, Islamabad faltered in the last 13 balls, losing six wickets and finishing at 193/9. Yaqoob’s remarkable performance in the penultimate over, where he claimed four wickets, including Munro’s, left Islamabad stunned.
Yaqoob ended with impressive figures of 5-27.
This victory marked Peshawar’s second consecutive win in a high-scoring contest, following their win against Lahore Qalandars by the same margin.
Peshawar have now secured three wins in the last four days, while Islamabad have suffered three consecutive losses.
Naveen-ul-Haq, the Afghan fast bowler, triggered Islamabad’s collapse by dismissing Azam Khan in the 18th over. Yaqoob then delivered a memorable over, taking the crucial wickets of Munro, Haider Ali, Faheem Ashraf, and Hunain Shah.
Earlier, Peshawar struggled in the middle overs against spinners Shadab Khan (2-28) and Agha Salman (1-25). However, Babar Azam’s aggressive batting against the pace bowlers helped Peshawar regain momentum.
Babar reached his half-century off 39 balls and achieved the fastest T20 century in the next 20 balls, including a flurry of boundaries and a six over extra cover against Hunain.
