NEW DELHI: The greatest name connected to the competition to date is Australia great Ricky Ponting, who will be the coach of the Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket in the United States.
A few days after the ICC T20 World Cup, which will be hosted in the West Indies and the USA, the second edition of the MLC is set to start.
“We’re not there yet.I haven’t committed to anything just yet, but I’ve had some initial discussions (with Washington),” Ponting told SEN in Sydney.
“The time of the year sort of fits in okay for me, but I’ve got a really hectic off-season again. When I say off-season, there’s no such thing as an off-season for cricketers anymore,” he said.
In addition to serving as the coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League for a record six seasons in 2024, Ponting will be a commentator for Channel 7 during the Twenty20 World Cup.
The former captain of Australia is therefore considering his alternatives before committing to the MLC term in full.
“It’s potentially another big year of time away if I want it, so there are things I’ve got to work through,” Ponting said.
“If I’m actually going to be commentating the T20 World Cup or not and if I’m not doing that, where does MLC fit in,” he added.
In the first MLC edition, Washington, coached by Sydney Sixers coach Greg Shipperd, had placed third overall. However, they were eliminated in the play-offs by eventual champions MI New York.
