VIZAG: It was a masterclass in the art of reverse swing. An apex predator and premier exponent of the art of fast bowling, Jasprit Bumrah proved too hot to handle for England in the second Test.
The abrasive second-day surface at the ACA-VDCA Stadium came in handy for the Indian pacer, who, in a matter of three torrid spells left the England attack in tatters. The experience of playing first-class cricket on slow tracks stood the pacer in good stead.

“If you want to take wickets in India, you have to know how to bowl reverse swing. I learnt to bowl reverse swing before conventional swing because you understand what you have to do here and find the areas to hit,” he said after his 6/45 sent England crashing to 253 on Saturday.

In stark contrast to the way veteran James Anderson claimed two wickets in the morning session, which saw India dismissed for 396 after England took the second new ball, Bumrah looked a totally different bowler after his initial spell of 4-1-24-0.
Zak Crawley hit Bumrah for four boundaries in the ninth over, which yielded 16 runs. But once the ball got old, Bumrah found his range and was in the zone. Fully aware of Joe Root’s vulnerability, skipper Rohit replaced Mukesh Kumar with Bumrah.

If Root was a victim of his own indecisiveness against reverse and succumbed to Bumrah for the eighth time, Ollie Pope was helpless against a Bumrah beauty that cannoned into the stumps. The Indian spearhead worked up tidy pace in this second spell of 4-2-3-2 and set up Pope beautifully.
“The ball was relatively hard,” Bumrah explained. “I had bowled a few away-going deliveries. I had not bowled a yorker till then. It did swing a lot. The execution was good. That phase was very important to get rid of Joe Root and Ollie Pope,” he added.

Bumrah, who was feeling his elbow during his second spell, was charged up after tea and the third spell of 4-2-9-1 saw him dismiss Bairstow for 25. His next, unfinished spell of 3.5-0-9-3 included the wicket of Stokes, who couldn’t believe his off-stump had been knocked back.
