Reflecting on the trials and tribulations, Bharat Arun, former bowling coach of the Indian team, recounted a significant exchange between Yadav and former head coach Ravi Shastri during a period of uncertainty.
Shastri’s words, urging Yadav to shed excess weight and prioritize fitness, served as a turning point in Yadav’s journey.
Arun, while speaking to the Indian Express, recalled what Shastri said to the wrist spinner then, “Boss, this puppy fat you have na has to be melted away… I can’t think of a single reason with improved fitness that you won’t become a world-class Test bowler.”
Yadav’s resolve was further tested by injuries, including a knee surgery and wrist fracture in 2022, which sidelined him from the game. However, his return heralded a resurgence characterized by enhanced fitness levels and a rejuvenated mindset.
Yadav not only reclaimed his position as one of India’s frontline spinners in Tests, but emerged as a leader in ODIs and T20Is.
Speaking on Yadav’s transformation, Arun highlighted the spinner’s dedication to improving fitness and refining his bowling technique.
“With better fitness, his basics (of bowling action) taken care of, he is now actively channeling all his energy at the other end, trying to beat the man there,” Arun remarked, emphasizing Yadav’s evolution into a dynamic fielder and potent bowler.
