“I thought it was a good score. It didn’t look like that kind of a pitch where you could get 170-plus at the start. But we played really well in the middle and finished off really well as well. Good score on the board, it’s just that we didn’t bowl according to the plans. (Not won the opening IPL match since 2012?) Honestly, that’s never been the talk. We always come prepared, whether it’s the first game or last game, we want to try and win every game. But we made some mistakes on the field which didn’t go according to plans. Axar hits the winning run as Delhi pulled off the heist in superb fashion to repeat a familiar script for Mumbai, who have never won their opening game in an IPL season in 3644 days.

What a hit! That was monstrous! Rohit looks disappointed. Axar begins the 18th over with a six against Sams high over deep backward square. A delivery later, against a slower one, Lalit dispatched it over long-on for a six.

Tim David dropped the chance to dismiss Axar in the 17th over. He quickly threw the ball down to stop the single, but Thampi, the bowler, was far away from the stumps to inflict a run out. Rohit looked devastated.

It was short, it was quick and Shaw went at it with a loose pull which resulted in the ball taking the top edge. It went high and Ishan Kishan picked the difficult catch as Delhi lost the opener for 38. A delivery later, he dismissed Powell for a duck.

Ashwin returned for his third over and conceded only four runs while Mills, who followed thereafter, gave away eight runs. Shaw managed to hit a boundary in the last ball of the ninth over.

The commentary box questioned Rohit’s strategy to bring in leg-spinner M Ashwin in the fourth over of the chase and the skipper told them why. “I am very happy. My lengths were good. I have been working really hard and have been talking to Ricky Ponting. Before this also I have been talking to Rohit bhai. I haven’t changed much in my bowling. The variation in pace was because I was in good rhythm. Rohit’s wicket was very important. Even Pollard’s wicket was very important as there were still four overs to go when he got out. The wicket is a good one. I was varying my lengths as I knew batters can step out and play it easily here.”

Daniel Sams began the final over with a superb six against Thakur. Ishan then smashed two back-to-back boundaries, one of which was helicopter shot as MI finished with 177/5. But Danny Morrison reckons it is a par score. What do you reckon MI fans?

He smashed the slower one at the start of the 19th over for a boundary through mid-wicket and dispatched the yorker delivery over the bowler’s head. Khaleel eventually ended the over with the wicket of Tim David for 12 (8).

He was picked as a finisher by Mumbai Indians at the mega auction with much expectation from the free agent from Singapore who owns a career SR of almost 160 and he showed by with that specatcular six against Thakur in the the final ball of the 18th over. The ball was outside off and David slapped it high and over the bowler’s head.

Just 34 balls! His 10th IPL half-century. And he brings it up in style with a superb six against Axar Patel. He will be the key for MI as they eye a strong finish after Kuldeep’s sensational spell.

Pollard looked to swivel the delivery from Kuldeep over mid-wicket, but Seifert made a spectacular effort to pluck the ball in thin air as the chinaman picked his third wicket in the game.

Just when he was starting to look dangerous for Delhi Capitals, Khaleel got rid of the youngster, dismissing him for 22. Did not get power on the slice shot he attempted against the shorter delivery and Prithvi Shaw waited at third man to take the catch.

Nagarkoti returns for the first time in the game since that over where he was smashed for 16 runs and the same story continued for the youngster. Tilak Varma scored two back-to-back boundaries before Ishan ended the over with a four as MI went past the 100-run mark.

He is single-handedly turning the game for DC and as Shen Watson just mentioned, he is “hungry” for wickets. He dismisses Anmolpreet Singh for 8 (9) as he picks his second wicket.

Second ball of his second over and Kuldeep dished out a back of the length delivery against Rohit and the MI skipper looked to go big only to find Powell in the deep. He goes back for 41.

He replaced Nagarkoti in the attack and conceded only three singles in the over.

He created the angle, got the pace, hit the right length to trouble Rohit before the skipper looked to end the pressure created as he attempted a scoop, but it fell short of Shardul Thakur at short fine leg. Rohit eventually ended it with a four slapped through the covers. 

MI end powerplay with 53/0

Pant brought back pace into the attack as he handed over the ball to young Nagarkoti, who is making his DC debut today. Short and wide and Rohit chopped it through to third man region for a boundary in the first ball. In the third ball, he went back of the length and angled it to leg side and you know what follows when Rohit is at the other end – six pulled over fine leg. Ishan joined the party, smashing the wider delivery through point for a boundary. 16 runs came off the over.

After a strong start from Mumbai, Rishabh Pant brought in Axar Patel to stop the run-scoring, but Ishan managed to slip in an unusual boundary. He looked to whip it across, but got the leading edge off which the ball went slightly over the bowler and then raced away towards the boundary. 

MI 32/0 in 4 overs

In the second over of the game, against Khaleel Ahmed, Ishan punched the outside-off delivery through the covers for his first boundary in the game.

He tucked the leg-side angled delivery from Thakur down to fine leg and elegantly lobbed the length delivery high and over long off for a six. 10 runs came off the first over.

Rishabh Pant: We’re going to bowl first. Very excited. The first thing we wanted to was to win the toss (and then he goes on to name his XI). I think the wicket looks nice to bat. In domestic cricket we have played enough here and we’ll be fine.

Rohit Sharma: We would have bowled first as well. It is a fresh pitch and we don’t know what to expect. It looks like a good batting track and there would be a bit of movement because of the green tinge. Whenever we play in Mumbai, we have to adjust quickly because the wickets are fresh. There are some restrictions in terms of capacity, but always nice to some crowds in.

“Playing here for the first time since 2015 and it is not a big ground. It’s red soil pitches here usually in this part of the country and there is so much grass here, expect some seam movement. I don’t think there’s so many runs and dew is not gonna be a factor.”

“We have no home advantage (Mumbai Indians) as we didn’t play any game in Mumbai in the last two years. Last year, many teams played Matches in Mumbai. So no advantage for us. It’s a new team. And I don’t believe in added advantage, and 70-80 percent of the squad hasn’t played in Mumbai before”

At the Brabourne Stadium, teams batting first have won six of the 11 games, with the average first innings score being 180.

The venue has staged only 11 IPL games between 2010 and 2015. It was in fact Mumbai Indians’ home ground during the 2010 season owing to the renovation of the Wankhede Stadium for the 2011 World Cup. Mumbai Indians won six of their seven games at the season. Delhi lost both their matches at the venue – in 2010 and 2015.

The last time Mumbai Indians won their first game in an IPL season was on April 4 of 2012, against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk (3644 days).

Sachin Tendulkar was still an active cricketer back then. Virat Kohli had only 12 international hundreds to his name and MI were yet to have their hands on the elusive IPL trophy.

Delhi Capitals have won as many as they have lost against Mumbai Indians in 10 IPL encounters since 2018. And they had scripted a double against Mumbai last season.

1. Australia’s David Warner and Mitchell Marsh are both part of the limited-overs series in Pakistan.

2. Anrich Nortje is continuing his rehab after he was cleared of “any serious injury”.

3. And, Lungi Ngidi and Mustafizur Rahman are presently in quarantine.

It was a forgettable 2021 season for Mumbai Indians, who had failed to qualify for the playoffs after finishing fifth. But Mumbai have got back part of their core batting line-up after they shelled out a colossal amount to rope in the young Ishan Kishan. And the middle-order was further strengthened with the addition of Tim David while the Bumrah will find an able support from Tymal Mills in the death overs.
