NEW DELHI: The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League kicked off with record-breaking viewership figures, as confirmed by the tournament’s official broadcaster. A staggering 16.8 crore viewers tuned in to witness the exhilarating clash between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22.
Disney Star revealed that the opening day of the tournament also saw an unprecedented watch-time of 1276 crore minutes, marking the highest-ever for the inaugural day of any IPL season.This metric reflects the cumulative time spent by viewers immersed in the game.

Furthermore, the inaugural day of the 17th IPL season witnessed a historic peak TV concurrency, with 6.1 crore viewers tuning in simultaneously to the broadcast on the Disney Star network. These remarkable figures underscore the immense popularity and widespread appeal of the IPL among cricket enthusiasts across the globe.
“Disney Star had recorded 870 crore minutes on the IPL’s opening day in 2023. In comparison to the previous edition, there is a growth of 16 per cent in TV consumption,” the company stated.
Defending champions Chennai Super Kings defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru by six wickets in the season-opener in Chennai.
“This growth is a reaffirmation of the incomparable capacity of Live Cricket to aggregate audiences on TV and provides a blockbuster start to the tournament. We will continue to enrich the magic of one of the world’s biggest sporting events to take forward the launch momentum and deliver unprecedented viewership,” a Star Sports spokesperson said in a press release.
The impressive TV viewership figures on the opening day of the IPL were preceded by a series of engaging programs in the lead-up to the 17th season, drawing in a substantial audience of over 24.5 crore viewers up to a week before the tournament commenced.
In the digital realm, JioCinema also witnessed remarkable traction, recording a viewership of 11.3 crore on the first day of the IPL. This marked a significant 51 percent surge compared to the viewership figures on day one of the IPL 2023.
The total watch time on JioCinema on the inaugural day of the tournament amounted to an astounding 660 crore minutes, further emphasising the widespread appeal and popularity of the IPL across various platforms.
