NEW DELHI: Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley has dismissed recent claims suggesting that key cricket boards, including India and England, overlooked a proposal aimed at safeguarding Test cricket.
Speaking in an interview with SEN Cricket, Hockley addressed the speculation, asserting that Cricket Australia remains deeply engaged in discussions both internally and with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to enhance the cricket calendar and promote the sport’s growth worldwide.
“Categorically, I think there was some misreporting around that…We’re very much involved with that piece of work,” stated Hockley, underscoring Cricket Australia’s dedication to supporting the ICC in ensuring the prosperity of all formats of the game.
The proposed changes outlined in the blueprint document, such as modifications to the Future Tours Program (FTP) and adjustments to the World Test Championship points system, aim to bolster the global appeal of cricket.
Hockley reaffirmed Australia’s active participation in these discussions, highlighting the nation’s role in driving strategic initiatives within the ICC.
Acknowledging the burgeoning popularity of cricket in emerging markets such as the United States, Hockley underscored the importance of a cohesive format strategy that accommodates all formats of the game.
He commended the enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming T20 World Cup co-hosted by the United States and the West Indies, citing overwhelming ticket sales as evidence of cricket’s growing global footprint.
With regards to Test cricket, Hockley stressed the significance of imbuing each Test series with context, particularly through the World Test Championship. He emphasized the economic viability of cricket in various territories and reiterated Australia’s commitment to prioritizing men’s Test cricket as a prized asset.
“Practically, it is making sure that the World Test Championship is given greater prominence so each Test series has context,” remarked Hockley.
