NEW DELHI: Anustup Majumdar played a stellar innings, smashing an unbeaten century to rescue Bengal, who ended the day at 242/4 in the Ranji Trophy Group B match against Assam in Guwahati on Friday.
The team faced early setbacks with Sourav Paul (12), Shreyansh Ghosh (13), Mohammad Kaif (2), and Sudip Kumar Gharami (10) departing cheaply. However, Majumdar and skipper Manoj Tiwary formed an unbroken 185-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Majumdar, aged 39, remained unbeaten on 120 from 197 balls, hitting 16 fours in his second century of the season. Meanwhile, Tiwary, also 39, took his time but ended the day not out on 68 from 187 balls, including seven fours.
In the process, Tiwary completed 10,000 runs in first-class cricket, making him the fourth player from Bengal to achieve this milestone, joining Pankaj Roy, Arun Lal, and Sourav Ganguly.
Facing a challenging situation at 57/4, Majumdar and Tiwary took control, playing sensibly and capitalizing on loose deliveries. Their partnership steered Bengal out of trouble, and at the end of the day, they held a strong position against Assam.
Among the Assam bowlers, Mukhtar Hussain was the most successful, taking 2/36, while Riyan Parag and Dharani Rabha claimed one wicket each.
UP take Day-1 honours vs Mumbai
In the Ranji Trophy clash between Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Mumbai, UP gained the upper hand by bowling out Mumbai for a modest total of 198 and finishing the day at 53/1 in response. The UP bowling unit put up an all-round performance to restrict the in-form Mumbai side.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the experienced India seamer, made early breakthroughs with figures of 2/57. Ankit Rajpoot (3/40) then made significant inroads in the middle-order, creating pressure on the Mumbai batsmen. Aaqib Khan (3/54) and Shivam Sharma (2/29) also contributed to the wickets column for UP.
Despite Mumbai’s top-order struggles, Shams Mulani played a crucial innings, scoring 57 (88 balls, 10×4), which helped the hosts avoid a more precarious situation at the Wankhede Stadium. Former India and Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane continued his lean patch with a score of just eight.
In their reply, UP lost Aryan Juyal early to Royston Dias. However, UP, who have drawn all three of their Ranji games this season, managed to reach 53/1 at the end of the day, trailing Mumbai by 145 runs.
Andhra ride on Hanuma Vihari ton
In a Ranji Trophy encounter at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, Andhra’s Hanuma Vihari played a resilient innings, scoring an unbeaten 119 off 243 balls with 15 fours and three sixes.
Captain Ricky Bhui also contributed significantly with a knock of 120 runs from 201 balls, featuring 14 fours. The duo combined for a partnership of 231 runs for the fourth wicket, propelling Andhra to a strong total of 277/4 against Chhattisgarh on the opening day.
Chhattisgarh bowler Ravi Kiran finished the day with figures of 2/36.
Shreyas Gopal hits ton
In another match of the same group, Shreyas Gopal played a crucial knock for Kerala against Bihar at the Moin Ul Haq Stadium. Gopal’s unbeaten 113 came from 196 balls, including 17 fours.
However, despite his effort, Kerala found themselves struggling at 203/9 in 68 overs by the end of the opening day’s play. Himanshu Singh was the standout bowler for Bihar, claiming 4 wickets for 50 runs in his 19 overs, while Veer Pratap Singh took 3 wickets for 26 runs in his 10 overs.
Kerala has had a challenging season so far, with one loss and two drawn games.
