It was an entirely different Iyer on display as he launched an aggressive assault on the Sri Lankan bowlers right from the outset at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
The thunderous moment came in the 36th over that left the crowd crazy when Iyer clobbered the biggest six of this World Cup so far. He went hammer and tongs against Kasun Rajitha and launched him over long-on for a 106 metres six.
The 28-year-old batter went on to notch up a 36-ball fifty, his second of the tournament, to lead Indian innings. His 16th ODI fifty saw his smack four sixes and two fours.
Earlier, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill forged 189-run stand for the second wicket after Sri Lanka asked India to bat first. But both Gill and Kohli missed out on well-deserved centuries as they fell for 92 and 88 respectively.
