“We definitely needed that (win). We put up a decent total. We are moving in the right direction. We have been very good in the bowling department. I thought 165 would be nice to get. I thought the PP was a good time to score. The fielding was amazing. Some great catching and good bowling indeed.”

Really good bowling effort. We felt there is enough tackiness in the wicket that we were able to exploit with the spinners and for the pacers to hold their nerve against some powerful death hitters to finish off the game was good.

“We did well to restrict them to 170 runs. What really let us down was the batsmanship. I feel especially when we are chasing, you know what’s required on the board and what the bowlers are doing. An important win for RCB as they return to top-4. They beat CSK by 13 runs, and Chennai Super Kings’ hopes for a playoff qualification are all but over.

It’s slightly tough on this wicket. It was gripping and skidding, kind of double pace pitch. So I tried to build a partnership with Rajat and then once I was set I was able to hit a few boundaries. CSK might be the happier side at the mid-innings break, but RCB did well to recover from losing their top-3 in quick intervals. The onus is now on their bowlers to step up after a series of inconsistent outings over the past few games.

The duo will be hoping to steer RCB to a strong start. They have opened in two matches for the side so far, but their opening stand hasn’t lasted more than 2 overs.

“I never thought I will play for CSK. It has been a dream come true journey so far,” Mukesh Choudhary says.

“Every game in the IPL there’s a lot of energy, the crowd going nuts and it is always exciting, but this being the Southern Derby we are all looking forward to having a good contest.”

“Until now I haven’t performed the way I would have liked. The team expects from me and I have not delivered. My role is to pick wickets in the powerplay and set the tone for the rest of the innings,” says RCB’s leading pacer.

“Not sure about the toss to be honest. It looks a better wicket. We were considering batting first tonight. The last game we made some steps, good batting performance, probably 10 runs short. But it was definitely the confidence we wanted to see in the guys coming in and scoring,” says Faf du Plessis.

“We will bowl first. The ball stops a bit initially. And it’s one of the venues where toss doesn’t matter much because it’s an open ground so the dew sets in pretty late,” says Dhoni.

CSK’s MS Dhoni wins toss, opts to bowl against RCB

This is the third game on this particular pitch at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The grass is taken off the surface significantly. More for pacers with subtle pace variations.

“It has been probably a bit indifferent (his form). I feel like I have been hitting the ball well, I feel there’s a big score round the corner. It has been a hard couple of games for us but we still have a great vibe around the group, if we can get a little bit of a run towards the finals (playoffs) then we can make an impact this season.” – Glenn Maxwell

MS Dhoni to take the field for the second time as captain against potentially his favourite opposition, RCB. CSK have enjoyed an excellent record against RCB, winning 19 of 29 games against the side under his captaincy.

“It is subtly drier, more grass taken off. Spinners generally tend to have a massive say in Pune. It is about the pacers. Lot more slower balls are now being bowled,” Danny Morrison says about the pitch at the MCA Stadium in Pune.

“He is a brilliant captain and motivator. Dhoni’s impact is such that people are believing even if the situation is hopeless about 2 weeks ago,” Swann said.

Ravi Shastri had an advice for Virat Kohli ahead of the game; “Look to time the ball and not muscle the ball.”

Kohli had hit a half-century in the previous game against SRH.

“I won’t be surprised if we see a different Jadeja. Because the pressure is off him now,” Ravi Shastri says about the CSK all-rounder in the pre-match show on Star Sports.

RCB are currently sixth in IPL 2022 table with five wins and as many losses in the league so far.

CSK are ninth with three wins and six losses in nine matches.

While RCB will enter the top-4 with a win, CSK face a must-win situation.

MS Dhoni could reach a number of feats with the bat tonight;

Mitchell Santner did take the wicket of Aiden Markram in the game against SRH, but conceded 36 runs in merely three overs. Will CSK put their faith in Santner, or bring back Moeen Ali in the game against RCB?

In the last game, CSK successfully defended a 203-run target against SRH at the same venue. However, the humidity levels are expected to be lower tonight, which means a possibility of less dew.

Will we see a captain braving the conditions and opting to bat?

In their first meeting, CSK began with the spin duo of Moeen Ali and Maheesh Theekshana in the Powerplay. Theekshana struck twice in the Powerplay, dismissing Faf du Plessis and Anuj Rawat.

Will Dhoni apply a similar tactic tonight?

MS Dhoni could become the only second captain to reach 6,000 runs in the shortest format of the game if he scores 6 more against RCB tonight.

Virat Kohli holds the record for most runs as T20 captain (6,451 runs in 190 matches).

The RCB spinners have combined to take 18 wickets in IPL 2022 so far. Wanindu Hasaranga has taken 15 of them.

Interestingly, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who was released by RCB ahead of this season, has picked 19.

Ravindra Jadeja may have not been in best of form, but there couldn’t be a better game for the ex-CSK captain to find his groove.

Jadeja has dismissed Maxwell on six occasions in 9 IPL matches, and will be aiming to win the battle against the Aussie star again.

The RCB captain has been dismissed five times by left-arm pacers in IPL 2022 so far; does this give an upper hand to Mukesh Choudhary, who has been in fine form for CSK?

Robin Uthappa will also be eyeing a massive IPL feat if he takes the field against RCB tonight. Uthappa is only 50 runs away from reaching 5,000 runs in the league.

Uthappa will become the only seventh batter in the IPL to reach 5000 runs.

Mukesh Choudhary has undoubtedly been one of the emerging players — not only for CSK but also in IPL 2022.

In 8 matches so far, Choudhary has taken 11 wickets and took a four-fer in the side’s last match against SRH.

Mohammed Siraj has conceded at an economy rate of 9.39 in the league so far, taking 8 wickets in 10 matches.

In the game against GT, Rajat Patidar took an aggressive approach while Virat Kohli bode time on the crease, scoring a brisk 52 off 32 balls while coming at no.3

RCB will be hoping for a similar performance from the Indian youngster tonight.

Harshal Patel has dismissed Dhoni twice, and Rayudu on five occasions in IPL 2022 so far. The pacer has been one of the most consistent bowlers for RCB so far, and will be aiming to provide the side with an early breakthrough.

MS Dhoni has rolled back the years with some brilliant performances with the bat in the ongoing season. Since beginning his season with an unbeaten 50 against KKR, Dhoni had put on 90 more runs in another seven innings, while remaining unbeaten in four. He boasts of an average of 35 with a strike rate of 132.07.

Shivam Dube, who scored a brilliant 95 off 46 deliveries, might return to the XI.

RCB are unlikely to make any changes to their XI that played against GT in their last game.

Seven matches have been played at the MCA Stadium in Pune in IPL 202 so far. The teams batting first have won four of them!

“We saw what happened with KKR last year. When the tournament was being held in India, KKR were nowhere in the picture but in the UAE they won just about everything and went into the finals. So things can turn around in a jiffy in this tournament,” Gavaskar said about the CSK, as he refers to KKR’s run to the final of the IPL 2021.

Virender Sehwag had earlier said that Dhoni can steer CSK to playoffs; however, the road for CSK isn’t as simple.

The side is currently at ninth position with six points so far. CSK have five matches remaining and they need to win all of their remaining games to keep their chances alive.

After a stellar start to the tournament, Dinesh Karthik’s performances have gone under the radar over the past few games. The wicketkeeper-batter has registered scores of 13*, 0, 2, and 6.

Wanindu Hasaranga has 15 wickets to his name in the 2022 edition of the season so far, and enjoyed a fruitful outing in his previou game where he took 2 wickets against Gujarat Titans.

The Sri Lankan is four wickets away from the first-placed Yuzvendra Chahal (19 wickets).

23, 12, 0, 33 — these are Maxwell’s score in his last four games for the RCB. Even as Maxwell’s 18-ball 33 was a positive — considering his low run of scores, the RCB would be hoping for a bigger contribution from their star no.4 batter.

Chennai Super Kings had registered their first win of the season when they last met the RCB. Batting first, CSK put on a mammoth score of 216/4, and then restricted the RCB to 193/9.

Spinner Maheesh Theekshana had registered figures of 4/33 in the game.

Interestingly, both of Gaikwad’s half-centuries this season have come at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Will he turn up against his former opening partner Faf du Plessis’ RCB tonight?

One of CSK’s main concerns had been Ruturaj Gaikwad’s inconsistent runs in the season. Gaikwad had registered only one half-century in the season until the last game, where he fell only one run short of a well-deserved century.

Gaikwad, alongside New Zealand’s Devon Conway (85* off 55 balls), forged a 182-run partnership for the first wicket, eventually steering CSK’s score to 202/2.

Ravindra Jadeja has been fairly disappointing with his performances in the IPL so far. However, with no pressure of leadership, Jadeja will be aiming to finding his groove when he takes on the RCB – a side against whom the all-rounder enjoys an excellent record (26 wickets in 29 games).

A top-heavy batting order hasn’t reaped rewards for the RCB so far. While Kohli’s form is naturally been an issue, Faf du Plessis has remained incredibly inconsistent. Glenn Maxwell, meanwhile, has been a pale shadow of his previous season’s performances so far.

Australia’s David Warner, who is playing for the Delhi Capitals, also had an advice for Kohli.

“Have a couple more kids and enjoy love! The form is temporary and the class is permanent so you don’t lose that. It happens to every single player in the world,” Warner told SportsYaari.

“It doesn’t matter how good a player you are, you’re always going to have these ebbs and flows. Sometimes the ebb is a long way before you get back up there. Stick to the basics,” he added.

CSK captain Faf du Plessis was relieved with Virat Kohli’s half-century in the previous game.

“That was a huge step in the right direction (on Kohli scoring runs). Cricket is a massive game of confidence and it’ll be huge. To get a solid fifty, it’s big for him and for us, something that we can take forward,” said Faf.

Virat Kohli has been going through a rough patch with the bat and even as he slammed a half-century in the side’s previous game against Gujarat Titans, the pace of his innings came under a significant scanner.

Kohli scored 58 off 53 deliveries and RCB will be hoping for a brisk start from their former captain.

Last week, the CSK made a shock announcement a day before their game against SRH, when Ravindra Jadeja announced his decision to step down as captain of the side. MS Dhoni was reinstated as the skipper and made a winning start, beating the high-flying SRH by 13 runs.
