RR vs MI highlights: Mumbai Indians end 8-match losing streak, get maiden win by beating Rajasthan Royals

SIX! Daniel Sams whacks the first ball out of the park. That’s it! Mumbai Indians finally put an end to their eight-match losing streak. The five-time champions beat Rajasthan Royals by six wickets to register their first victory of the season.

Kuldeep Sen to Pollard: OUT! Would you believe it? Pollard is holed out. MI still need 4 runs off 5 balls. Drama more drama. MI have just forgotten how to close out a match it seems.

Tim David is one strong, powerful man. Just brute force on this occasion. Rides the bounce and smashes it through covers for a boundary. The previous one was an inside edge for boundary but MI wont mind. They are set for their first victory of IPL 2022.

Chahal to David: SIX! Whacked out of the park. Where was this David? Hiding in the dugout for all this while. Tossed up from Chahal, David uses his long reach to just smash it over long on.

Prasidh To Tilak: OUT! Just what Rajasthan needed, quick wickets. A length ball, on off. Varma looks to heave but the ball goes off the inner half of the bat and to long on where Riyan Parag comes forward and completes the wicket.

Chahal to Suryakumar: OUT! TAKEN! Chahal gets his man in the end but this was an unnecessary shot from Suryakumar Yadav. Tilak had already hit a six and the required rate was just about 7, there was no need to take Chahal on. He tries to hit the leg-spinner over long on but doesn’t clear the boundary. The Royals have a sniff now.

Chahal to Tilak: SIX! Tilak Varma joins the party now! This is full and around off. Varma prods and slog-sweeps it way over the deep mid-wicket fence for a biggie.

Ashwin to Suryakumar: SIX! Going going gone deep into stands. It made a cracking sound the moment it hit his bat. What a fantastic way to get to his fifty. Suryakumar and Tilak are making it look easy now.

Kuldeep to Tilak: FOUR! Not where Varma intended it to go but he will take that! A length ball, around leg. Varma stays back and looks to whip it through the leg side but it goes off the inner half of the bat towards fine leg for a boundary.

Chahal to Suryakumar: SIX! Wow what a shot that was. He tried that shot previously but missed it but this time he nails it. Gets underneath the ball slogs sweeps it over the deep square leg fielder for a six.

How impressive has been Kuldeep Sen so far? Near 145 km/h almost every delivery and hits the right areas. Only 3 runs of the over. RR bring back control

Three boundaries ffrom Suryakumar Yadav and a six from Tilak Varma. 20 runs from Daryl Mitchell’s over. Suddenly the MI innings takes flight out of nowhere.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Kishan goes now! On a length and angling around off, there is some extra bounce. Kishan looks to pull but gets a top edge. The ball balloons to the keeper, Sanju Samson who doesn’t have to move much. A simple catch is taken and both the openers are fallen now.

Ishan Kishan is in the mood today. Smasshes Prasidh Krishna for a couple of fours. Kishan needs to stay in the middle for as long as posssible for he has the ability to take the pitch out of the equation. 

Ashwin to Rohit: OUT! Top-edge and taken! No luck for Rohit Sharma on his birthday. Ashwin gets the big wicket.

It’s a different Ishan Kishan that has walked out to bat today. The one that we know, who was lost for the first half of this season. What clean hitting from the left-hander against Prasidh Krishna.

Boult to Kishan: SIX! What a way to get off the mark. Short and wide from Boult and Kishan flashed at it with no half measures and the ball flew over third man for a six.

Rohit tucks it away nicely off his hips to get off the mark with a single. The Mumbai Indians need a strong start and all eyes are on the birthday boy Rohit Sharma.

What a brilliant last over by Meredith, only 3 runs from it and the Rajasthan Royals finish with 158 for 6 in their 29 overs. Jos Buttler top scores with 67.

Meredith to Ashwin: OUT! The brilliant cameo comes to an end. He depart for 21 off 9 balls, the Australian youngster gets his second wicket of the night

Even Bumrah is going the journey. Ashwin is in some mood today. He is auditioning for the finisher’s role in the Royals’ side. How beautifully he has played with Bumrah’s mind and hit him for those two fours in the penultimate over.

3 balls a four and now a six. Who says Ravichandran Ashwin can’t hit big in the slog overs? Superb stuff from the all-rounder. Brings all his experience into play, predicts the length and speed of Meredith and gets the big shots going.

Meredith to Riyan Parag: OUT! Lightning doesn’t strike twice. Last-match hero Riyan Parag has been dismissed for 3 by Meredith. He went for the big shot but didn’t get the desired connection and got holed out in the deep.

6, 6, 6, 6, . and OUT! What an over. Jos Buttler after hitting four consecutive sixes off Hrithik Shokeen, has been dismissed off the last ball by the young man. He walks back for 67 but has this over changed the momentum of the match in RR’s favour.

Shokeen to Buttler: SIX, SIX! SIX! Oh what a player Jos Buttler is. Just when we were worried about his timing in this match. He sticks on the the young off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen. Slams him for a hat-trick of sixes and also gets to his fifty.

Sams to Mitchell: OUT! Outstanding from MI. They build the pressure from both ends and finally the result comes. Sams get rid of Daryl Mitchell. The New Zealand batter was struggling to time the ball from the beginning and no ends up giving a simple catch to birthday boy Rohit Sharma.

Not often do you see Buttler struggling to hit the boundaries but this has been one such night. A combination of good bowling by MI and the slowness of the wicket one would have to say here.

Good over for MI! is having a good match so far. He has troubled Buttler with his pace and also the slower ones. The right-arm seamer has given only 8 runs in his 2 overs son far.

Good comeback from Kartikeya after being hit for a four in his first ball of the over by Dary Mitchell. Five singles from there on, a productive over for the Royals.

OUT! Debutant Kumar Kartikeya gets the big wicket of RR captain Sanju Samson. Just the story of Samson. Gets off to a flyer and then hits a half-tracker straight to the fielder in the deep. Oh he would be mighty disappointed. Exactly the opposite scenes in the MI camp. They are chuffed for the youngster Kartikeya, who has his maiden IPL wicket.

Shokeeen to Samson: SIX! again. Another flighted delivery and another big six from Samson’s bat. The RR captain has taken a likling to the offf-spinner. The previous one was over long off and this one over long on.

Shokeeen to Samson: SIX! Wow that is huge! Sanju Samson dances down the ground and blasts it over long-off for the maximum. That is certain to put the young off-spinner under pressure. Will be interesting to see how he responds.

Meredith to Buttler: OUCH! That must have hurt. A 140 km/h bouncer hits Buttler straight on the helmet. He was through with his shot early there. It appears to be a slow wicket. Buttler is having some treatment, never nice when you are hit on the cricket field.

Back-to-back fours from Jos Buttler. He attacks the young MI off-spinner just after he had removed the England keeper’s opening partner.

OUT! Hrithik Shokeen strikes for Mumbai Indians. Devdutt Padikkal goes for 15. It was flighted delivery, Padikkal wanted to hit the off-spinner ffor a six but ended up providing a simple catch to the long-off fielder. Maiden IPL wicket for young Shokeen.

RR 26/1 after 4.2 overs

Oh what is happening MI? Dedvdutt Padikkal hit back-to-back boundaries off Daniel Sams and provided a simple catch to third man but Tim David drops it. MI should have got both the RR openers out by now.

Bumrah to Buttler: FOUR! Oh how costly will that turn out to be? Daniel Sams misjudged it. He ran it from the fine leg boundary and the ball went over his head. It would have been regulation catch had he stayed on his mark. The ball landed right on the half volley on boundary hoardings. It results in a boundary. But a what good bouncer from Bumrah straight up to Buttler.

That is a good start by Daniel Sams. He beat Devdutt Padikkal’s bat in the last delivery and hit the right areas throughout. Only 3 runs from the first over.

Rajasthan Royals openers Jos Buttler, Devdutt Padikkal are out in the middle. Daniel Sams will start the proceedings for MI.

The players of both sides have lined up to applaud the legendary Shane Warne who died last month. Warne was the first captain of the Royals and he also led them to the IPL title in the inaugural edition in 2008. Warne is referred as the ‘first Royal’.

Preparation has been good, most of it has been done before the tournament. Hopefully we have some fun in the middle, that’s what we have been missing. We want to try and see how we enjoy ourselves. It’s important to stick together as a group: MI captain Rohit Sharma at the toss.

This pitch – it has been used before, so it doesn’t look uniform in the grass covering. Looks a little bit patchy and it’s dusty. The spinners are going to come into their own today.  This pitch will not be easy to bat on. The ball will not come on at a uniform pace, it’ll be two-paced: Graeme Swann with the pitch report.

Kieron Pollard has been an absolute legend for the Mumbai Indians, make no mistakes about that but the West Indies’ all-rounder has been rather inconsistent for the last two-three seasons. Pollard has scored only 90 runs at an average of 16 and his strike rate of 127 has been an even bigger worry.

Yuzvendra Chahal with 18 wickets has hogged most of the limelight but the experienced Ravichandran Ashwin has slowly but surely managed to make his presence felt. In the last four games for RR Ashwin has bowled tight line and has picked 6 wickets at an average of 20 and strikes after every 16 balls.

A few eye brows were raised when Mumbai Indians shelled out ₹8.25 crore for Tim David. The Australian-born right-hander plays for Singapore and has shown his might in the Big Bash League. But what was even more baffling was MI’s decision to play him only two matches. The big hitter could well do with some backing from the MI management.

The current orange cap holder of IPL 2022 Rajasthan Royals’ opener Jos Buttler will play his 50th match in the IPL today. The right-handed batter from England has been almost unstoppable in this edition. He has already scored 499 runs in 8 matches and would to make his 50th appearance memorable by hitting another big one.

Rohit Sharma, the MI captain, needs to lead by example to get his team their first win of the season. This year he averages 19.12 and has a balls/dismissals rate of 15.12 which is the lowest for him in any IPL season. Against RR Rohit has scored 536 runs, but since RR’s readmission in 2018 Rohit hasn’t been able to score freely and has been dismissed within 12 balls. He would look to change the same today.

The Rajasthan Royals have managed to do all the right things in the this edition of IPL. They have been driven by two outstanding individual performances in both the batting and bowling departments. Jos Buttler is at the top of the Orange Cap list while Yuzvendra Chahal is leading the Purple Cap one.

What can Mumbai Indians gain today? For starters, a victory. It has been the most difficult thing to achieve for the most successful of the IPL in this edition. They have created the unwanted record of being the only side to lose eight matches in a row at the start of the tournament. They have no chance of qualifying for the playoffs but if they can manage to pull off a few wins in their remaining six matches, it will do a world of good for them in the upcoming editions.

Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians have met 25 times in the IPL. MI have a slight edge with 13 victories while RR have emerged on the winning side 12 times.
