Lucknow win the match by 20 runs in Pune to grab two crucial points in the IPL 2022 

The India pacer bowls two three back-to-back dots

10 runs came off the first two balls in the final overs. Can Dhawan go all the way through?

In his final over for the game, he dismissed Rahul Chahar as he grabbed a three-wicket haul in the game, conceding just 24 runs. 

He has been impressive tonight with his bowling and has been rewarded with his second wicket as he dismissed Rabada for 2. PBKS now go 7 down as Lucknow aim to close in. 

Rashid Khan did it the other night. Tewatia has been doing it since 2020. Can Dhawan do it tonight? Well, he starts off with a boundary against Avesh Khan in the 17th over. PBKS need 42 runs in 18 balls

After a superb bowling, Krunal completes the most important catch. Chameera takes the pace off the ball against Bairstow and goes wider and fuller as the batter threw his bat at it to edge the ball towards Krunal at third man. PBKS have lost their last hope to go 6 down in the chase

After surviving the lbw scare, Bairstow smashed Bishnoi for two boundaries in the 15th over. 11 runs came off the over. Punjab Kings need 51 runs in 30 balls. Still manageable.

It has been a superb bowling performance from the spinner as he finished with 4-1-11-2 against Punjab which included a wicket maiden in the last over

He has been superb throughout the evening and he picked his second wicket in his final over, dismissing Jitesh Sharma for just 2. Against the straighter one, Jitesh looked to push the ball forward. The ball struck plumb on his pads, but the umpire denied the appeal. LSG opted for the review and were successful.

PBKS 92/5 in 13.2 overs

He returns for his second over and strikes straightaway in his very first delivery, dismissing Livingstone for 18. The batter looked to play the scoop shot against the slower one and got the softest of edge as De Kock grabbed it comfortably.

PBKS 88/4 in 12.1 overs

Just three more singles in his third over. In three overs he has conceded only 11 runs for a wicket.

PBKS need 66 runs in 48 balls

The England batter takes on Bishnoi for back-to-back sixes in the 11th over – one over long-off and the other over long-on. A delivery later, Bairstow managed a boundary through deep extra cover. Big over for Punjab.

PBKS 85/3 in 11 overs

Krunal gives away just two runs in his second over. LSG are looking to keep Punjab quiet through the middle phases of the game. 

PBKS 67/3 in 10 overs

Just 7 runs came off Bishnoi’s second over. Punjab need a bit of stability here. It’s still chaseable in Pune. Punjab Kings need 89 runs in 66 balls

A very smart bowling from Krunal! He angled the ball across to the left-hander as Rajapaksa looked to play for the turn. The ball took the leading edge and went to KL Rahul towards the off-side.

PBKS 58/3 in 8 overs

In 14 balls, he managed only five runs. He enjoys taking on leg-spinners and has a strike rate of over 200 against Bishnoi. Hence with the youngster coming in he fancied his chances, but was bamboozled with the leg-break delivery as PBKS went 2 down

Lucknow were 39/1 at the end of the powerplay. Punjab, on the other hand, are seven runs ahead so far. 

Avesh Khan into the attack, provides Bairstow with the width and he pounces on it to smash it towards third man for a boundary. Bairstow ended the over with a boundary towards long-off.

PBKS 46/1 in 6 overs

KL Rahul takes a brilliant catch as Chameera provides the big breakthough to LSG. He anticipated Mayank’s move and hence moved left and made the jump to perfection to complete the dismissal.

PBKS 35/1 in 4.4 overs

Mayank has decided to return to his aggressive best as he hit the first ball from Chameera in his second over for a six over third man. 

Not the right line from Jason Holder as Mayank capitalised on it to hit the ball through short fine leg for a boundary. Eight rusn came off the over

PBKS 29/0 in 4 overs

Mohsin went fuller down to the off side as Mayank made room to muscle the slice over point for a six. It is the first six for Punjab in the innings. Mayank ended the over with a cheeky boundary against the shorter one, sending it over the slip region towards third man. 15 runs came off the over. 

PBKS 21/0 in 3 overs

Just two runs came off the over – a single and a wide. Superb start from Lucknow. 

PBKS 6/0 in 2 overs

Barring that leg bye four in the second ball, which was well out the reach of De Kock, Mohsin delivered a decent over to start with. 

PBKS 4/0 in 1 over

Punjab openers Mayank and Shikhar Dhawan make their way to the middle. LSG break the team huddle after some words of wisdom from captain KL Rahul. Mohsin Khan to open the attack for Lucknow. 

“There was bit of movement early on. Crucial wickets slowed them down. I don’t have any excuses actually. Am just prepared to bowl at any stages of the game. At the beginning, through the middle and at the end. It was a little bit sticky and we went for the hard lengths in the middle period. I wouldn’t say it is flat or it is extremely tricky. The batters just need to apply themselves in the middle to score runs.”

An excellent last over from Arshdeep, where he conceded only nine runs, saw Punjab restrict Lucknow for 153/8 in 20 overs. Rabad picked four while Chahar picked two in the game.

Chameera looked ambitious against Rabada after hitting him for two sixes at the start of the 19th over – one over mid-wicket and the towards third man – but eventually fell in the third ball. Rabada finished with 4-0-38-4.

LSG 144/8 in 19 overs

After being hit for a six, Chahar changed his length and line, went fuller and wide of off as Holder smashed it high and towards the fielder at extra cover. It was his second wicket as LSG went 7 down. 

Chahar pulled back his length as Holder stepped out, cleared his front leg to launch it high and over long-on for a huge six in the 18th over

Just seven runs came off the over, all in singles, from Arshdeep’s third over. 

LSG 118/6 in 17 overs

Against a length ball around middle, Stoinis hit it off the toe end of the bat towards Chahar. The bowler followed it and grabbed it superbly to pick his first wicket in the game.

LSG 111/6 in 15.3 overs

Rabada struck for the second time in the ov er this time to dismiss young Badoni for just 4. LSG have now gone 5 down in a matter of just 14 deliveries. 

Krunal looked to go over the long-on fielder against Rabada, but found Dhawan as he departed scoring seven off seven in the game. LSG go 4 down in quick time. 

A superb throw from Bairstow saw a lazy Hooda being run out at the none-striker’s end. LSG have suddenly lost two quick wickets, and both their well-set batters. 

LSG 104/3 in 13.3 overs

A length ball, angled down towards the wide of off as De Kock looked to punch it straight, but edged it behind to the keeper. He walked back for 46 off 37. Sandeep ended with 4-0-18-1. 

LSG 99/2 in 13 overs

After conceding three singles in the first five balls, Hooda smashed the last ball for a four over the bowler’s head. 7 runs came off the over.

LSG 89/1 in 12 overs

After being hit for a six, he conceded nine more runs in the next five balls to give away 23 runs in two overs in all. 

LSG 82/1 in 11 overs

It was the 600th six in IPL 2022. Hooda launched the first delivery from Livingstone’s second over for a six over long-on. 

A sweep against the leg side delivery from Rahul Chahar by De Kock saw the PBKS pair bring up their fifty-run stand off 43 balls. Hooda has scored 16 off 20 in that partnership. Seven runs came off the over

LSG 67/1 in 10 overs

After eight overs of pace, Mayank introduced Liam Livingstone into the attack and his first delivery was driven through covers for a boundary. He gave away eight runs in his first over. 

LSG 60/1 in 9 overs

After being hit for a six in the first ball of his second over by Hooda, Dhawan conceded only three singles in his next five deliveries which took Lucknow past 50 runs in the game.

LSG 52/1 in 8 overs

After managing only three runs in his first 12 balls, Hooda broke the shackles with a lofted six against Dhawan towards long-off fence.

After just five singles in his first two overs, he conceded two singles and a wide in his third over. He has a bowling figure of 0 for 8 in three overs now. 

LSG 42/1 in 7 overs

A leg bye towards fine leg boundary leaves Lucknow Super Giants with 39 runs at the end of the powerplay for the loss of one wicket. Barring that one over from Rabada, PBKS were spot on with their bowling. 

Against the shorter one, angled down to the off, from Rishi Dhawan, de Kock looked to go for the big one, but edged it behind towards third man. Rabada made the run, grabbed it, but the ball slipped out of his hands. 

The two sixes along with three singles and a wide in the fifth over has given some boost to the LSG side, who have been kept quiet so far. 

LSG 32/1 in 5 overs

A fuller delivery from Rabada and De Kock slammed it straight down town for a flat six. And then came another, in the very next ball. Against the length ball, he dispatched it high and over cow corner for a humongous six. 

After giving away just two singles in his first over, he conceded three singles in his second over. PBKS have kept things tight so far in the game. 

LSG 16/1 in 4 overs

Rahul scored the first boundary in the game against Rabada, driven through covers before edging the fifth ball of the ball to the wicketkeeper. Rahul departed for 6 off 11. 

LSG 13/1 in 3 overs

The powerplay specialist conceded just two singles in his opening over. Superb start from the pacer. 

LSG 7/0 in 2 overs

Arshdeep look the shape the ball into Rahul, following the Trent Boult blueprint, but the latter managed to get his pad in the way to drift the ball down the leg side in the final ball of the over past the keeper for a boundary. 

LSG 5/0 in 1 over

Lucknow openers KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock make their way to the middle. Mayank shares some final words of wisdom in the team huddle. Arshdeep to open the attack for Punjab. 

“Looking forward to today’s game. we have had five days between our last game, we are ready to go, no excuses today. We are just trying to figure out the right make-up of our team. It’s a good sign for us because we are still winning, we are sitting at a solid position on the table and I don’t think we are playing our best cricket. So, we are figuring a few things out and we’re getting to the point again now, so hopefully we iron out a few of those things out.”

“We are going to bowl first. We’d like to know what total to chase. No changes to our line-up. There is very less dew here. The guys are quite flexible. It’s going to be a terrific challenge.”

“Quite balanced, we are going to look at this as another game, another opportunity for us to get two points. We all enjoy playing this tournament and every game is important. Regardless of which opposition we are playing, we try to enjoy our cricket, try and execute our plans. This is one game I wouldn’t be wishing well for Mayank (*smiles*).”

“When dew is not around, it’s quite an even game. It’s important for us to start well, really assess the conditions in the first couple of overs, set-up a really solid base and then enjoy our batting and explode. I have played here before, we’ll have to bat smartly. Manish misses out, Avesh Khan comes in. It’s a high boundary-scoring ground, one extra bowler would give more options. It’ll be a good opportunity for Jason to bat at seven. Ideally wouldn’t want him to bat, but if he does, it’s a good opportunity to show his batting skills.”

Punjab Kings captain Mayank Agarwal wins toss, opts to bowl against Lucknow Super Giants in Pune

“It was a difficult pitch (against CSK), but we played according to the wicket and it’s good to see the winning result. (When dropped from the playing XI) I just kept on working on my practices because there’s nothing much I could do. When Jonny returned to the side, it was obviously for the team balance. I just kept on training. I am just enjoying the game at the moment. They (LSG) have a very good combined XI, so we just want to go out there and have fun out there. 

“The uniqueness of this pitch for me is about the lengths. Not so much fuller, it’s about bowling length and it’s about bowling bouncers and getting people out with the short ones. You can see why the players want to bowl short, because of this beautiful, even covering of grass. Guys with pace and energy love it here. 29 wickets to the short ones and 20 off length, suggests enough little bit of extra bounce here in Pune.”

Speaking to Star Sports ahead of the game, Harbhajan Singh feels LSG have it in them to go all the way to the playoffs given KL Rahul’s form while Piyush Chawla feels that while Mayank needs to step up as a batter, the team looks balanced in this season.

“Lucknow Super Giants have been playing really well. KL Rahul got another hundred. He’s incredibly good. He’s so consistent. For a top-order batsman to be as consistent as he has been.. I think he has lasted four or five years right at the top. t is really difficult in T20 cricket to be so consistent. He’s got such a great recipe for what he does. It seems really low-risk batting but he is scoring big runs, at a strike rate of 140, which is just freakish.” – on The Grade Cricketer podcast.

The left-arm pacer’s ice-cool approach in the death overs have left many veteran cricketers impressed including Ian Bishop, Daniel Vettori and former India head coach Ravi Shastri who have all backed him for a place in India’s T20 World Cup squad.  

It worked perfectly well for the team against Chennai in the last game and hence Mayank will stick to the same XI. 

The only likely one is the return of Avesh Khan who had missed the Mumbai Indians game owing to a “small niggle”. If he returns, Mohsin Khan will have to sit out.

The uncapped left-arm pacer, who was retained by PBKS, has managed only three wickets at eight runs per over in eight innings, but the 23-year-old has won all the praises from veteran cricketers owing to his death-over heroics in IPL 2022. In nine overs during the phase, he has conceded at just 7.33 for a wicket. He has been the most economical pacer in the death ov er (min 30 balls) this season and fourth overall after Narine, Rashid, and Chahal.

Pacers have picked 62 wickets in 14 innings this season at 25.08 with an economy rate of 8.30. Spinners, on the other hand, have picked 20 wickets at 34.80 with an economy rate of 8.04.

In seven games at the venue, teams batting first have won four games and lost three with an average first innings score of 172.

Rahul Chahar has dismissed him once for 36 runs in 35 balls while Kagiso Rabada has managed to concede 23 runs against him in 21 balls for a wicket.

He is presently the second highest run getter in IPL 2022 with 368 runs in eight innings at 61.33 and at a strike rate of 147.79 with two centuries and a fifty.

Sri Lankan international Dushmantha Chameera has so far dismissed the India opener twice in 25 balls in T20s for just 30 runs. Meanwhile, he has struggled against Krunal Pandya as well, scoring only 29 off 26, albeit without a wicket.

Dhawan’s unbeaten 88 off 59 helped PBKS win by 11 runs against CSK and hence Punjab might want the senior batter to continue with his role in the match against Lucknow

Punjab changed their approach in the previous game against CSK where they opted a more conservative approach before a calculate innings from Dhawan led them to respectable total. “We don’t want to lose too many wickets in a bunch, that was a conscious effort [today], but at the same time not going in a shell and being aggressive,” Dhawan said after the game. “We keep that nice balance, play with the presence of mind and smartness, not just play with power-hitting but playing with the fields as well.”

In eight games this season, Punjab scored 180 or more five times and thrice were they restricted to a total below 151. They have the third best six per ball ratio, fourth-best scoring rate and and the second-lowest batting average. While the strategy has received mixed reviews from veteran cricketers, PBKS have been left struggling with four wins and as many defeats in eight games to stand seventh in the table.
